SOS Rudder

SETTING UP AN SOS RUDDER


The following photos show the fitting of an SOS Rudder onto its mounting brackets set up on a Wylie 39. Note that the owner has built a combination step and lower mounting fitting for the lower mounting brackets.

The SOS Rudder parts are removed from their storage bag.

The transom of the Wylie 39 "Punk Dolphin". The upper mounting brackets are on the transom, and the lower mounting brackets can be seen on the after face of the step near the bottom of the transom.

The upper rudder post is attached to the rudder, and the mounting tubes are fitted to their castings.

The upper mounting tubes are fitted into the upper mounting brackets using bolts or fastpins.

The SOS Rudder is lowered until the lower mounting tubes contact their brackets (two photos).

This detail photo shows the shim blocks fitted under the upper mounting brackets, aligning the bolt holes and allowing the bolts or fastpins to act as pivots.

The lower mounting tubes are fitted into their mounting brackets and all bolts are tightened.

The tiller is bolted to the rudder head. On this installation, the tiller has an offset bend to clear the backstay. The SOS Rudder is ready for use. When the boat is moving, the stern wake will rise and the entire rudder will be submerged.
